Hikvision Nvr Setup for Continuous Recording

Every now and then you may have a situation that arises where your client does not require a large recorder (NVR/DVR).
There is now a variety of Hikvision IP Cameras that can operate as a standalone system with an SD card used for the recording instead of a traditional recorder.

To set this kind of system up you will require a network cable, power supply (either 12VDC or POE injector), an SD Card (up to 128GB) and of course the camera. A PC/laptop will be required for the configuration.

The first step will be to install the SD card into the camera, for our example we will be using a DS-2CD2355FWD-I Turret Camera.

• Remove the outer ring of the camera to expose the locking screw.

• Loosen the locking screw (note this does not need to be fully removed)

• Move the ball part of the camera so that you can access the removable panel for the SD card & reset button.

• Remove the panel and insert your SD card the correct way around. The SD card should only fit in one way, do not force it.

• Replace the panel, reposition the camera and tighten up the locking screw.

• Now we need to configure the camera

All Hikvision IP CCTV devices require activation before they can be used, to do this download and install the latest version of SADP onto your PC/laptop.

Connect your camera to either your network or to you PC/laptop ethernet port. Connect power to the camera.
Run SADP on your PC/laptop.

You should be able to see the camera on your network, and if it is a new camera it should be showing as 'inactive'. This just means that a password has not yet been set on the camera. You can activate the camera through SADP by selecting the camera and then entering and confirming the password.

Now that you have activated the camera with a password you can also configure any network/IP settings.

So, now the camera is active and set up on your network you should be able to web browse to the camera to complete the configuration.

Enter the IP address into the address bar of internet explorer and log in with the admin username and password.

Go to configuration, and enter the time settings.(This is especially important whenever you need to check playback to check against the correct times).

Now go to storage Management, you should be able to see the SD card is present but not initialized. Select the SD card and choose to format (initialize).

You can now choose whether you want continuous or motion based recording. Go to Schedule settings under the Storage section, with the limited size of an SD card it often makes sense in these scenarios to use motion based recording but sometimes you will want to use continuous. You can set up different days and time periods with different settings if you wish. For this example I have set our camera up on everyday motion recording (shown here with the green blocks in the schedule). I would usually advise you to go into the advanced settings here and increase the post record time to 30 seconds or more. (Post record time is the minimum amount of time the recording will continue after the motion has occurred.).

The next step in this case would be to enable the motion detection. Go to Event>Basic Event. Tick enable motion detection and in the linkage method enable 'Trigger Recording A1'.

Now whenever the camera detects motion, it will start recording onto the SD card.

Test the camera is recording as expected and if it is then it is ready to be placed in it's position to record.
The camera can be put up on it's own with a 12VDC power supply and will record whenever motion is detected, if you need to check the footage then you can plug a laptop into the camera and view the playback that has been recorded.
